Where do we take-off from?
Misty River Ballooning utilizes multiple launch sites in the Pioneer Valley and near by hill towns. The launch site for your balloon ride is determined by the forecasted wind direction that day.
Where do you land?
Since a balloon travels with the wind, we don’t have predetermined landing sites. The pilot uses good judgment in choosing a location large enough to make a safe landing.
How long is the flight?
Your hot air balloon ride is approximately 1 hour in duration or longer as time, fuel and landing areas allow. Your total balloon experience lasts about 3 hours. This includes the set-up time, the flight itself, packing up the balloon after the flight and then the traditional post-flight toast.
What can I bring aloft?
Dress seasonably with comfortable, casual clothing. Footwear must be sturdy and flat-soled. Water-proof boots or hiking shoes are a good option. Long pants are also recommended. The temperature in flight will be about the same as on the ground. Bring your sunglasses, baseball cap and camera.
What time do we fly?
We fly early in the morning, just after sunrise and few hours before sunset. The winds are usually calmest at these times.
After the flight, how do we get back to our car?
Our chase vehicle remains in constant radio and visual contact with the balloon. After landing & pack up, you will be driven back to our meeting location.
Do you need a pilot license to fly a balloon?
Yes, the FAA issues a balloon pilot certificate after a written test and flight exam. Don holds a commercial pilot certificate and is a flight instructor for hot air ballooning. The balloon itself must undergo a yearly inspection by an FAA certified official inspection station.
How far ahead should we book a flight? We suggest you make reservations for flights one to two weeks in advance. However, we will make every effort to accommodate your party on shorter notice.
